The mission of Lusíada’s Centre of Research and Development in Industrial Engineering and Management (CLEGI), in keeping with that of the Universidade Lusíada – Norte, is to promote and organize Research and Development in the fields and Technologies that feed the development of knowledge among its researchers, lecturers and students. The aim is that such scientific and technological development will promote high standards of education in the scientific areas associated with the Centre, namely in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management. CLEGI’s mission is also to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this area and promote the dissemination of this knowledge amongst scientists and the academic community in general.
CLEGI’s existence is linked to courses provided by the University and its surrounding community in general, since it aims to contribute to the development of both of these. The scientific areas are harmonised with the post-graduate courses, in particular those that relate to the development of research in the context of Master’s and PhD theses in the following scientific areas: Engineering and Industrial Management; Operational Management; Energy Management; and, Electronics and Computer Engineering.
The geographical location and area in which CLEGI is situated, means that it benefits from a highly dynamic industrial environment, one of the most productive in the country. The industrial environment mainly consists of small and medium sized enterprises that are heavily dependent on technology to secure their future development and competitiveness. The dimension of these companies does not facilitate such technological development or good management practice.
The Research Centre’s operations are based on the benefits that they can bring through the exchange of knowledge between teaching, research and industrial competitiveness. From the educational point of view, lecturers and post-graduate students can benefit from an organized research structure, focused on the areas of teaching, providing a solid basis and source of up to date knowledge. The research activities benefit from the participation of post-graduate students, renewing and increasing the development of scientific and technological knowledge. This symbiotic relationship guarantees the focus on the research objectives and, therefore, contributes positively to the Centre’s maturity and the academic degrees offered by the University.

The research activities guarantee high standards and promote high quality education, providing students with knowledge and skills that means that they can implement best practice, whether at national or international level, supported by a culture of high standards, sustained organizational efficiency in order to guarantee increased quality of life.
Knowledge transfer, as well as dissemination, deepen the relationship with the community and provide a real life context to the research and teaching activities. The project is grounded in the interests of these different parties and leads to a vision that is based on integration in society directed at the development and well-being of the community.
